A mentally disturbed teenager was shot after approaching NYC police with a hairbrush. Police were called to his home during a domestic disturbance with his mother in which he was heard in the background claiming he had a gun. The teen was mentally ill, and earlier in the day his mother had tried to have him committed to a mental hospital. When police arrived at their apartment building the teen could be seen pacing in front of the window, his mother was outside. He began yelling at her from the window and then climbed out and came toward police with a black object in his hand that they believed was a gun. The incident escalated and shots were fired.

The boy, 18 was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The black object in question was really a hair brush.
