A former heart surgeon who was convicted of killing his wife over 30 years ago has been given parole. His release was scheduled for December of this year but the parole voted to free him early. Charles Friedgood was serving a sentence of 25 to life. Friedgood was arrested at the airport while attempting to flee the country after murdering his wife with an overdose of the pain killer Demerol. He was attempting to leave with over 400,000 in life insurance and other assets he obtained after her death. Friedgood was convicted in 1976 .

Friedgood was denied parole over 5 times in the past, and has been battling terminal cancer. In light of the situation a special parole hearing was made and the vote was 2-1 in favor of his release.
